When Jesus said, ‘Love one another as I have loved you’ he surely wasn’t calling us to be nice, tolerant and politically correct. So what was he calling us to? What kind of people was he calling us to be? As we look at 1 Cor 13 this morning what Paul gives us is a definition of love but have we lost the depth of what Paul is saying in these verses because we have become so familiar with them? One of the things that characterises the Christmas story is joy; in Luke’s version alone there 5 references to joy and rejoicing. In our reading from Matthew this morning we hear about the joy of the Wise men as they arrive at the house where Mary and Joseph are staying. Writing to Christians in Philippi Paul says, ‘Rejoice always.’ But how, amidst the fluctuating mood swings we all experience, is that even possible? What is this Christian joy? What are its characteristics? How might we define it; and is it any different from the joy experienced by those who don’t follow Jesus?

Words like, ‘Saviour, Messiah, and Lord’, would have been very familiar to those first readers of Luke’s gospel, but what about those of us reading these same words today; what might it mean practically for us that the baby born in a manger and wrapped in swaddling clothes 2000 years ago is our Saviour, our Messiah and our Lord. And what does this peace, spoken of by the heavenly hosts in the skies above Bethlehem, look like?

In a culture where many of us experience information overload how do we learn to deal with the daily distractions that constantly bombard our minds. How do we keep our focus? How do we choose not simply between what is right and what is wrong but what, amongst a number of viable options, is ‘better’ or ‘best.’ These are some questions we will explore this morning as we look at Luke’s account of Jesus’ visit with Mary and Martha.

‘Strike the Shepherd & The Sheep Will Scatter, - What do you do with those troublesome people, those influential characters who, if allowed room to operate, will bring others under their influence? Well, you isolate them; you neutralize their effectiveness; you strike at the source of the trouble; which, of course is precisely what the Devil tried to do with Jesus. This morning, then, we will look at how he tries to do that, why he fails and why, as a result, Jesus is such good news for us today.

Some, perhaps many of you will know that 2000 years ago Jesus Christ died a criminal’s death on a Roman cross and that not long after this his followers began to proclaim that this same man Jesus Christ was ‘good news’, a proclamation that is still made by Christians today. But how and in what sense can a man crucified 2000 years ago be good news for us today? Well, that is the question we will be looking at this morning.

It is time to wake up and smell the coffee.’ If there was ever a time when people needed some good news it is now. So Paul writes, ‘It’s news I’m most proud to proclaim, this extraordinary Message of God’s powerful plan to rescue everyone who trusts him, starting with Jews and then right on to everyone else!

In the prologue to his gospel John writes, ‘The Word (God’s Son) became flesh (became Jesus) and made His dwelling among us.’ He then goes on to say, ‘We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only...’ My question this morning is, ‘What was it that John saw? What was it about the life and ministry of Jesus that so captivated John and resulted in Him becoming a lifelong follower of Jesus and produced in him the conviction that he must write down what he saw? And on the back of that question, why is it that this morning you believe, or perhaps don’t believe in God?

The Scriptures tell us that where there is no vision the peoples perish. The same is true of hope – where there is no hope people just give up. As our Advent journey begins today so our focus will be on one of the themes of Advent, namely hope, and in particular Isaiah vision of hope found in the second chapter of his book.

2000 years ago, in a synagogue in the city of Nazareth, Jesus Christ declared himself to be God’s Messiah. So let me ask you, if you were a Jew in the synagogue that day, would you have believed him? Why? Since that day many hundreds have declared themselves to be God’s Messiah, and Scripture warns us that in the last day many will come saying, ‘I am the one.’ So who should we believe? Why? Who on earth are you following?
Judging a Book by its Cover - Mansell Morgan

How often are we guilty of ‘judging a book by its cover;’ guilty of presuming that because people seem ‘whole’ on the outside – no wheel chair, plaster cast or sling – they are ‘whole’ on the inside as well? When Jesus sees a woman who for eighteen years had been bent over and unable to straighten up he sees more than just her physical disability; what he also sees is her spiritual disability. At a time when more and more people are facing mental health challenges it is a story (one that can be found in Lk 13:10-17) that reminds us that Jesus’ concern was for the ‘whole person’ – their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being.
